When the Bali Green School decided to install an ATM they were torn. Electronics doesn’t really line up with their sustainability focused mission. Instead of burning liter of gasoline to get money from an ATM ten kilometers away, they made the decision of having the greenest and coolest-looking ATM on earth.

Solar Powered ATM green school Bali

The idea started to grow when a Banker from BII ( Bank Internasional Indonesia) agreed to arrange an the installation of an ATM. As everybody can imagine how much concrete and how ATM looks like, the folks of the green school decides to design their own.

They replaced tons of concrete by a very large stone in which they bolted the machine. They built an enclosure with Bamboo, recycled glass and aluminium. The cherry on top is the set of four solar panels, set on bamboo stalks so they look like antennae. I don’t believe that four small solar panels like these can powered the ATM but it’s a good way to promote renewable energies.

Solar Powered ATM green school Bali

John Hardy writes (Green School Founder): “It’s not a perfect world. The solar panel is normal GE solar panels, cable is regular cable. We are very proud at how we made the whole thing look and appear. People are amazed to see a pretty ATM. I guess that’s the point. It’s working well, serving the community and saving a lot of trips to the villages where people used to have to go to cash.”

Solar Powered ATM green school Bali

Even if it’s really powered by an underground power cord the green school try to have a different looks on actual infrastructure of our world. Thanks to them we can easily imagine a greener world.

Communicate from or to Bali

From your country to Indonesia: + 00 62

Local phone number

- To Denpasar and the Bukit: 0361
- To the Bali Center (Kintamani, Batur lake…) : 0366.
- to the North (Singaraja, Lovina…) : 0362.

Example: To call someone located in Denpasar from your country : 00 62 361 + his 9 numbers

Public center call

We name it WarTel (Warung + Telpon) from a wartel you can call and receive phone call from anywhere. Most of them are opened from 8 am to 11 pm some of them are opened 24 hours. We can find them everywhere in Bali even in remote areas. They are useful to make a call in a quiet place without paying excessive price (the price is display and a ticket is printed)

Handphone

If you are planing to stay and if you have an unlocked phone you can buy a local SIM card. This is the easiest and cheapest way for local communications especially SMS.

Internet

You can be connected to Bali Happenings from almost every touristic area in Bali (bars, warung, Shops, …) but the Wifi is not available in every corners. You will find easily a Warnet a place where you can sit down in front of a screen connected to the net for a really cheap price. After beach time the warnet are crowded.

Driving in Bali

A Motorbike is the best way to enjoy the Balinese freedom. Riding a bike make your journey different in fact you don’t get stuck in the traffic jam for hours, you go where and when you want and you will get lost. Getting lost is a part of the balinese culture don’t worry. It’s also the cheapest transport: 35 000 Rp/day or 600 000 Rp/month.

A Car is a safety way to discover Bali. We advise you to hire a local driver because driving a car in Bali is quite hard. To rent a car without driver cost 80 000 Rp /day with a driver 100 000 Rp/day exclude gasoil.

Read our funny article about Driving in Bali

Driving license

Bring your international driving license. The police is a bit corrupted but it’ s changing and don’t play too much with the police.

The money and the tips

The national money is the Indonesian Rupiah 12 000 Rp = 1 euro , 9 000 Rp = 1 USD. Dollars and euros are accepted in the touristic area but the exchange rate is higher.

If possible don’t exchange your money in the airport, the commissioning is higher than everywhere in Bali.

Wherever you want you can get cash from an ATM with a Mastercard,Visa, Amex,… You will be charged 3% depending on your bank and the ATM. Prefer ATM that allow you to get 3 000 000 Rp rather than 1 500 000 Rp to avoid extra charges.

In Bali, tips are common. Some restaurants or bars charge you 10 – 15% for service charge but some others don’t.In the airport for the porters and other service like this they get paid with tips.

Bali Life’s cost

The Balinese life is cheap if you accept to be a bit adventurer. For eating you can find whatever you want. But keep in mind that the western food is more expansive than the local food. As an average we can say that you will spend per meal per person: 50 000 Rp with a drink. You can easily eat for a cheaper price if you dare!

There are many “gastronomic” restaurants where you can spend 120 000-150 000 Rp/person.

To know more you can find a list of prices in Bali.

You want to discover the Real Bali, the Bali that we see on the postcards? Bali Happenings gives you some tips to get off the beaten track in Bali.

How to get off the beaten track in Bali

Learn indonesian language

Indonesian language

Not hard to do, just learn some Indonesian Words. Seen like a proof of respect it will literally change your Bali’s adventure. Bali is still an indonesian Island, the official language is indonesian not english. Even if many young people speaks english most of balinese don’t speak english, keep it in mind. We often met expats living in Bali for 15 years that don’t speak indonesian at all… no comments. Learn Basic Indonesian language

Avoid Kuta, Seminyak, Legian, Nusa Dua (the resort) and UBUD!

kuta-seminyak-legian

Kuta, Legian, Seminyak, you may know, are on the beaten Paths these areas are turistico-commercialo-party-mixtures. We aren’t writing that it’s the “Hell”, but for us the real Bali is somewhere else. Drinking beers, surfing, chilling on the beach are activities that we love to do in kuta, seminyak or Legian. And just a word about Ubud: It’s a touristic area!!!I am just laughing when I heard : Ubud is so authentic…..

Get Lost

get lost in Bali

Here is the simplest tip : Prepare your bag, get a rain coat, rent a bike or a motorbike and get lost. This is the best way to find wonderful places. If you have learned “Di mana…??” (Where is…) it’s enough. Don’t forget to use sun cream on your arms, legs, face and neck to avoid you to “grill” on your motorbike…cool wind in your hair but agressive sun on your skin. Read our article about driving in Bali.

Share with locals, live like locals

Warung In Bali

In Bali there are people from all around indonesia( Javanese, Balinese, Sulawesi, Lombok, …). A good way to have great tips is to share with the Balineses, they know very well their island.

One thing that you have to do is to eat in the “Warungs”.Dare to enter these small restaurants, there are everywhere. Indonesians love cooking and they are good in it. You can be sure that they serve good food if many locals are eating in.

Be hosted

You can easily find on your road a nice family that would host you for one or two nights.Playing chess, drinking coffee, speaking, laughing and smiling will be your principal activity. You will for sure be free from your ‘western’ problems and you will start wondering why you don’t smile like this everyday. Just respect them, never get upset and smile.

We hope that these short tips will help you to find your way to enjoy the real Bali off the beaten track.
